This Sunday night is the first Sunday night of the month, which means it's Bible Q&A time here at the Calhoun Church of Christ! As always, we have some good questions submitted by the brethren here, including some by our youth. Come to the 6:00 worship assembly this Sunday to go to Scripture for the answers! 1. Why did Old Testament people live hundreds of years, but the average person now dies before one century? 2. Can someone who is not a Christian baptize someone? 3. Can someone who is not a Christian serve someone the Lord's Supper? 4. Why is God referred to by the name "I AM"? 5. Why are there so many churches?
Long ago, God told the Jews, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…” (Hosea 4:6). Centuries later Jesus would say to religious leaders, “You are mistaken, not understanding the Scriptures…” (Matthew 22:29). On the other hand, God considered the citizens of the town of Berea “more noble-minded” than the citizens of Thessalonica because the Bereans “received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily…” (Acts 17:11). The Holy Spirit would later inspire Peter to command Christians to “long for the pure milk of the word” in the same way infants long for milk, “so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation” (1 Peter 2:2). The reason the Psalmist would “not sin against (God)” was because “Your Word I have treasured in my heart” (Psalm 119:11). We need the Bible very much, and my column in this weekend's Calhoun Times explains why. Please read it and share it with your friends by going to https://calhounchurchofchrist.com/2019/04/03/we-need-the-bible/
Many people think the 24th chapter of Matthew teaches that there are certain signs to watch out for because they will let us know when Jesus is about to return. Is that what Matthew 24 is really about, though? This coming Sunday morning at the 11:00 worship service at the Calhoun Church of Christ, I'm going to preach about one of the most misunderstood chapters of the New Testament. Calhoun family, please take time this week to read chapters 24 and 25 of Matthew so you'll be familiar with the text by the time you hear this lesson on Sunday. If you're in Calhoun, GA, this Sunday, come worship and learn with us! Hope to see you then...

This Sunday I'll be preaching about someone in the Bible whom I'd guess your Sunday School teacher never told you about...Barzillai. There's quite a lot that Barzillai can teach us about how to be better Christians, and we're going to go over the lessons he can teach us at the 11:00 worship assembly at the Calhoun Church of Christ this Sunday morning. So in the meantime, open up those Bibles and see if you can find him, read about him, and then if you're in Calhoun, GA, this Sunday, come and learn what he can teach you about improving your walk with God and your relationship with your fellow Christians. Hope to see you on Sunday! :)
I know that many read of chapter 12’s account of the war in heaven where Michael and his angels fight against Satan the dragon and his angels and conclude, understandably, that this must be a reference to way back before Eden when Satan initially rebelled against God. However, verse 10 gives us a reason to conclude that it actually took place at a different time. To find out when Satan was thrown down and what that means for you, read the rest of my column in this weekend's Calhoun Times by going to https://calhounchurchofchrist.com/2019/03/27/the-great-dragon-was-thrown-down-revelation-129-10/
Noah found grace. So must we. Since all of us have sinned (Romans 3:23) and cannot be saved without grace (Ephesians 2:8; Titus 2:11-12), we need to find grace just like Noah did. Paul said that what was written in the Old Testament was written to instruct us, encourage us, give us hope, serve as an example to us, and correct us (Romans 15:4; 1 Corinthians 10:11). Noah’s biography is in the Bible for a reason. It serves as a guide to help us find grace in the eyes of the Lord today. If we want the grace of God, we must be like Noah. To find out more about the type of man Noah was, read the rest of my column in last week's Calhoun Times by going to https://calhounchurchofchrist.com/2019/03/27/find-grace-like-noah-did/

The Calhoun Times recently asked me to write an article for them about technology and its impact on the church. I wrote this mainly from the perspective of how today's technological advances in the form of smart phones and tablets have made a positive impact in my work as a preacher and in the possibilities of Bible study for all Christians. The folks over at the Calhoun Times published this in their paper yesterday, and even went put some pictures of our website and Facebook page in the piece as well! Check it out!
Jesus prayed specifically “that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us” (John 17:4). That same love which eternally exists between the divine Father and Son must also exist between believer and Lord (14:15 and 15:14). It is on this very basis that unity among believers of this common faith is possible: “that they may be one just as We are one” (17:22). Read the rest of David Bragg's article in the current Carolina Messenger about the essential relationship between love and unity in the church by going to https://carolinamessenger.wordpress.com/2019/03/21/the-relationship-between-love-and-unity-david-bragg/
Mention the word “fellowship” to many Christians, and images of sliced ham, fried chicken, green beans, casseroles, and a table full of desserts enter the mind. The term “fellowship meal” has been coined to refer to a congregational meal where members enjoy food and social interaction. While it is appropriate to use the word “fellowship” in such a way, the word means much more and has many more applications than enjoying food or social activities together. To find out more about the biblical concept of fellowship, read the rest of Michael Grooms's article in the current issue of the Carolina Messenger by going to https://carolinamessenger.wordpress.com/2019/03/20/what-is-fellowship-michael-grooms/
Perhaps you've just made the decision to become a Christian and make Jesus your Lord. Perhaps you're already a Christian but you've not let Jesus rule in your life as you should, and now you've decided to change that and come back to Him. If you've just risen up out of the waters of baptism as a new-born follower of Christ, or if you've just repented as a wayward Christian and come back to Christ and His church, you probably have a question on your mind... "What do I do now?" This Sunday morning at the 11:00 worship service at the Calhoun Church of Christ, let's go to the Bible and find the answers together. Hope to see you then!

If we picture a bishop, chances are we’re thinking of a Catholic member of the clergy dressed in long, white robes who wears that large hat. If we talk about a pastor, we probably have in our mind a preacher, the man who gets in the pulpit every Sunday. One thing we might not know is that the Bible uses the terms “bishop” and “pastor” interchangeably to refer to the same office. Biblically, bishops and pastors are the same thing, and it might not be what we think. Read more of what the Bible says about pastors and bishops in my column in this weekend's Calhoun Times by going to https://calhounchurchofchrist.com/2019/03/13/what-the-bible-says-about-pastors-and-bishops/
The Bible teaches that there is more to salvation than just getting saved and going to church. When we start thinking otherwise, we are in danger of falling away. Much evidence exists which contradict the popular notions of Darwinian evolution. The purpose of today’s column, however, is to present another line of thought. I want to address all readers who profess faith and allegiance in Jesus Christ and His teachings. What is the basis for your faith in Jesus? This Sunday night at 6:00 is the next Bible Questions & Answers forum at the Calhoun Church of Christ! We have some great questions this month, half of which have been submitted by the kids here at Calhoun! :) Come learn more from the Bible with us this Sunday night! 1. Why did God make harmful animals? 2. What does John 1:1 mean? 3. Why don't we follow the Old Testament? 4. How does the devil work today? 5. Isaiah 64:4 states that no one has seen another God other than "Thee." This implies that someone has seen God. Either the writer is talking to Jesus or John 1:18 has an alternative meaning. Thoughts? 6. Why do we wear the name "Church of Christ"? What other names are scriptural? What names are not scriptural?
